Unexpected Kitchen Countertops

Thinking about a kitchen remodel? There is a lot that goes into a complete remodel from choosing your appliances, flooring, cabinetry, lighting, fixtures and countertops. In this post, we will discuss countertop choices that aren’t your typical options. We’ll walk through four unexpected countertop materials that will make your kitchen unique and beautiful.

Wood

We recently wrote about 2020 Kitchen Trends and we’ll be seeing a lot of grainy woods and natural woods. Especially for the eco-conscious family looking to incorporate eco-friendly materials into their homes. Reclaimed wood countertops offer an antique and unique look.  Ensure you seek a professional when considering wood countertops. The wood will need to be treated and sealed by a professional as well as maintained to avoid harboring germs.

Concrete

Concrete countertops have an industrial look to them that works well in modern and traditional kitchens alike. Definitely not the best option for an inexperienced DIY’er. One of the biggest advantages of concrete countertops is they can shape it to fit any size. Concrete is durable and very heavy. It is also pourous and can crack easily. Similar to wood countertops, concrete will need special treatment and sealing to avoid bacteria.

Glass

Glass countertops are a unique option as they cost about the same per square foot as other materials (granite, quartz). Recycled glass is another great option for the eco-conscious family, whether translucent or colored glass is a great option to combine with other elements within the kitchen.

Soapstone

Soapstone is an uncommon countertop option compared to granite or marble. Although a beautiful and unique choice.  Soapstone has a warm, milky appearance that integrates well with other design features. Soapstone is stain resistant and easy to clean. One downfall is that soapstone is not available in a lot of colors. Typically, your options are shades of white and grey. Another disadvantage is the cost. Soapstone is more expensive than granite.
