A comfortable 1946 raised ranch, with a second floor addition, had a uniquely designed kitchen. Most would say the space wasn’t functional but if you were to ask Bruce and Frances, they would tell you, “we like it just the way it is”. The design seemed to flow around a large oak table that sat under a secondary window that faced the side of their neighbor’s house. This table was used for daily meals, family gatherings, food preparation, and a place to pay the bills and do some paperwork. It was a very important space in their home. We made some suggestions and at first they were reluctant but after seeing the design come to life using a three dimensional imaging program they were on board. We first removed the secondary window and bricked it in from the outside. We framed the opening and reinsulated both exterior walls. Both walls became part of the working kitchen. We brightened the kitchen by using white cabinets, light quartz countertops and white hand glazed subway tile for the backsplash. The kitchen now has more storage, surface area for food prep and a lot of light even with the secondary window gone. Oh… they still have an oak table it’s just a little smaller.
